More than 200 innovations to the new 21c Database, including automated machine learning, native blockchain tables, and persistent memory
The announcement is of the important ones. With Oracle Database 21c,this is
the name of the new version of Oracle's converged database, more than 200
innovations arrive, which in the company's intentions expand the convergence of
the database for new use cases, optimize performance, improve the productivity
of developers, analysts and data scientists.
The new Database 21c is the engine behind Oracle's cloud and on-premises
databases, including Oracle Autonomous Database, Oracle Exadata Database
Service, Oracle Exadata Database Cloud@Customer, and Oracle Exadata Database
Machine.
Among oracle Database 21c's 200 innovations are immutable blockchain
tables, designed to feature tamper-proof SQL tables, JavaScript In-Database,
native JSON binary data, AutoML for in-database machine learning, and Support
for Intel Optane persistent memory. Not only that, the improvements also cover
in-memory features, graphics processing performance, partitioning, multitenant
functions and security.
It is therefore no coincidence that Andrew Mendelsohn, Executive Vice
President, Database Server Technologies at Oracle (pictured in the opening
photo) explicitly wanted to emphasize, during the presentation at last week's
Oracle Live online event, that "Oracle Database 21c is a new step in our
strategy to offer the most powerful converged database engine in the
world".
Full convergence
The main point is precisely that of convergence: unlike other databases in
the cloud or on-premises, Oracle Database 21c supports the demands of
multi-model, multi-load and multi-tenant environments; all within a single,
modern converged database engine. "With our other competitors, we need separate
databases and JSON document, operational, analytical, graphs, machine learning
and blockchain services to support all of these capabilities. Oracle's
convergent approach makes developers creating new applications much more
productive and makes it easier to evolve them later to respond to new business
demands," Mendelsohn added.
Italian customers
Among the first users of the innovations made by Oracle Database 21c there
is also an important customer of our house: Angelini Pharma, who particularly
appreciated the functionality of the blockchain tables: "the Quinaryo XRing
solution was an important step forward in our IoT strategy, which allowed us to
experiment with the use of wearable device integrated with a data security tool
based on a blockchain table solution", said Pietro Berretoni, Digital
& Innovation Head of Angelini Pharma. "With Oracle Blockchain Table the
solution offers us tamper-proof ledgers, which can be easily integrated with
other applications without requiring us to build a new, complex infrastructure
– given that it is an Oracle Database with all the tools we already know, and
with the new features that we can take advantage of in our XRing solution for
the collection of sensitive data".
Low code in the cloud
The Oracle Live online event in mid-January was also an opportunity to
announce the availability of Oracle APEX (Application Express) Application
Development, the well-known APEX low-code application development platform in
the form of a managed cloud service, which developers can use to easily and
quickly build data-driven enterprise applications . Oracle APEX Application
Development is the evolution of APEX capabilities available for two decades and
already used by 500,000 developers, offered as an easy-to-use, browser-based
service to create modern web and mobile applications.
Originally, APEX was only available as part of Oracle Database, while it is
now available in standalone mode and works with a variety of applications.
Available on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), this service costs $360 per
month, offers support for more than 500 users and unlimited applications, and
scales elastically when more capacity is needed
